Hungary’s beloved queen, Sissi, returns to the screen
According to DWDL magazine, Netflix is planning to release a new Sissi series: the German production about Elisabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, will be titled The Empress.
Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie Wittelsbach, known as Sissi (or Sisi), was born in 1837 in Munich. As the wife of the Austrian Emperor, Franz Joseph I, she became Queen of Hungary in1867.
Beloved by Hungarians, Queen Sissi became one of the dominant female figures in our history.
The most well-known adaptation of her life is the Austrian Sissi trilogy from the 1950s, directed by Ernst Marischka, reported SokszinuVidek.24. The success of these movies is mainly attributed to Romy Schneider’s outstanding portrayal of the Empress of Austria.
German producer, writer, and actress Katharina Eyssen is among the inventors of the series. This is not the first time she is working with Netflix. Last year, she co-wrote and produced the mini-series Zeit der Geheimnisse (Time of Secrets). The screenwriters are currently working on the script, and casting will begin soon.
In the six 45-minute episodes of the first season, creators plan to show the first months of Sissi’s life in the Habsburg court. Depending on the reception and success of the first season, Netflix will probably renew the series for another season.
So far, there is no information about who will play the role of Queen Elisabeth.
